Kalaripayattu

Kalaripayattu is one of the world's oldest and most scientific martial arts, originating in Kerala, South India. Often called the "mother of all martial arts," it is a comprehensive system that combines combat, healing, and artistic expression. The term "Kalaripayattu" is derived from two Malayalam words: "kalari" meaning 'school' or 'training ground,' and "payattu," meaning 'to practice' or 'exercise.' The art form is as much a spiritual journey as it is a physical one, aiming to achieve a perfect harmony between the mind, body, and spirit

Levels of Training

Kalaripayattu training is traditionally divided into four main levels, each building upon the skills learned in the previous one.

  • Meithari (Physical Training): This foundational level focuses on developing core physical attributes. Students learn body postures (vadivu), stances, and a series of unique, fluid movements. The goal is to gain flexibility, strength, and body control. Movements mimic the graceful yet powerful actions of animals like the lion, elephant, and snake.
  • Kolthari (Wooden Weapons Training): Once the student has mastered Meithari, they progress to Kolthari. This stage involves using wooden weapons such as sticks of various lengths, including the Kettukari (a long staff), and Cheruvadi (a short stick). The training enhances coordination, reflexes, and the understanding of distance and timing.
  • Ankathari (Metal Weapons Training): This is a more advanced and intense level where students learn to use sharp metal weapons. This includes the Urumi (a flexible sword), Kadara (a dagger), and Vaalum Parichayum (sword and shield). The training is rigorous and demands a high degree of precision, control, and focus.
  • Verumkai (Bare-Hand Combat): The final and most advanced stage focuses on unarmed combat. It involves techniques for striking, grappling, locking joints, and understanding the vital points of the human body (Marmam). This level requires profound knowledge and skill, as it emphasizes self-defense and the use of the body as a weapon.

Key Benefits

Practicing Kalaripayattu offers a wide range of physical and mental benefits.

  • Physical: It significantly improves flexibility, strength, stamina, and body awareness. The unique movements and stretches also help in correcting posture and preventing injuries.
  • Mental: The discipline required in training enhances focus, concentration, and self-control. It also builds confidence, resilience, and a sense of discipline.
  • Healing: A lesser-known but crucial aspect of Kalaripayattu is its connection to the traditional Ayurvedic healing system. Practitioners learn about the body's vital points (marmam) and are often trained in traditional massages and herbal remedies to heal injuries.
